I’m new in sap flow measurements and I would like to know:
(1) What is the minimum duration of measurement (for a scientific work) if you want to distinguish between different genotypes (rootstock effect in apples) without a particular treatment (water stress, etc.). I’m asking this because I have a limited no of sensor and I would like to make repetitions within the block (change sensor between shoots and trees)(2) When presenting sap flow measurement, is it best to show the complete set or only several days which are typical of the period and maybe combined with high/low radiation, soil water potential, temperature?

GuestI think the works of Ukrainian authors as Nadezhdina NE, Il’nitskiy OA, Odintsova VA should be very useful , for example http://www.nbuv.gov.ua/portal/Chem_Biol/Sad/2008_61/39.pdf
But for many scientists the measurement results of sap flow rate through night would be discovery. Provided that the temperature in the crown will be below the temperature in the root zone, you can see the sap movement in direction to roots. That is the explanation for many phenomena, including circadian control of root elongation http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-3040.2011.02286.x/abstract. Maybe You will be first to see it in night. -
