Deionised (deionized) water (DI) is water that has had all mineral ions removed. The physical process of deionisation involves the use of specially-manufactured ion exchange resins which bind to and filter out mineral salts from the water. The end result is similar to distilled water however, does not involve the removal of uncharged organic molecules, viruses or bacteria, except by incidental trapping in the resin, nor does it remove hydroxide or hydronium ions from water. Deionisation can be quick and inexpensive and is used in laboratories for making reagents.
