Elemental analyser – (EA 1110 CHNO; Carlo-Erba Instruments, Milan, Italy), an instrument used to determine the concentration of total nitrogen and carbon in a sample. The machine is calibrated against a standard of known composition analysed under the same conditions as the unknowns.
