The modeling approach is based on a protocol for measuring sizes, form and orientation of different plant components, i.e. the stem segments between leaves and the individual leaves. The model provides a number of functional properties, including the efficiency of light interception, water balance, and mechanical stability (Pearcy et al. 2005, Tyree & Zimmermann 2002).
